What Everyone Should Know About Plant-based Protein Options

Protein is a macronutrient that is necessary for our bodies to function properly.  It helps our body maintain its muscle, skin and hair.  It also plays an important role in weight loss and weight maintenance.  For those of you that want to add a little variety to your diet or that have made a conscious choice not to eat meat, it is important to know what your plant-based protein options are.  A meat-free meal or diet does not have to mean protein-free.  There are many reasons plant-based proteins are a healthy option: they provide antioxidants, fiber, minerals, vitamins and phytochemicals.  The combination of fiber and protein these foods contain make them great options for an increased feeling of fullness and weight control.  In other words, they have great staying power and give you a lot of bang for your calorie buck!

Here is a list of healthy plant-based proteins:

-Beans, lentils and chickpeas (adding brown rice to any of these makes a complete protein)

-nuts

-hemp and chia seed

-soy

-whole grains: quinoa, oats, amaranth, buckwheat

With all of the positive research regarding plant-based foods and disease prevention, incorporating these foods can be a smart choice for your health while adding variety to your diet.  After all, variety is the spice of life!

Diets Don't Work!

If we put as much time and energy into our long-term weight management goals as we do into “quick-fix, fad diets” we would all be successful!
